This course is designed to assist immigration practitioners who already have experience in representing child victims of trafficking or practitioners and academics who wish to further develop their knowledge in this field.
The course will include a review of case law which impacts upon protection claims by trafficked children, a discussion on the formulation of relevant particular social groups under the Refugee Convention, the use of UNHCR Guidelines in preparing and arguing protection appeals, the weight and role of NRM decisions in such appeals, how to best apply relevant domestic and international case law in support of such claims and, crucially, how and when to seek protective measures for the giving of evidence by vulnerable child witnesses.

The course will consider the legal basis and practicalities of challenging age assessments by the UK Border Agency and local authorities in the light of the developing case law and the approach being adopted in the Upper Tribunal. The course will discuss recent policy and cases and also work through a number of case studies to test out different approaches to judicial review as a fact finding exercise.
This course while useful for all those representing refugee children in their asylum cases, is specially relevant for those who wish to work in the area of legal challenges to unlawful age assessments in the Upper Tribunal and in the High Court.
