DT 1344 Understanding Schengen Visas: The New Community Code on Visas

On 5 April 2010 the Community Code on Visas, an EU Regulation, became operational. This covers the issue of short stay visas, documents that must be supplied with the application, refusals, appeals and the role of private companies in the application process. Consultates of Schengen States (all EU member States except Ireland the UK), wherever they are in the world, must apply this code. It is therefore relevant to all those who see clients who wish to travel to Schengen States. Professor Elspeth Guild, co-convenor of ILPA's European subcommittee, has practised, written and lectured widely on the Schengen system since its inception. This intensive session will give you the opportunity to learn from a world expert all that you need to know about the Schengen system.

Topics:

On 5 April 2010 the Community Code on Visas, an EU Regulation, became operational. This means that all Schengen Consulates around the world (including in the UK) must apply the Code rather than national law (or the previous Common Consular Instructions). Schengen States include all EU Member States except Ireland and the UK. The Code now provides:

  • the rules of the issue of short stay visas;
  • what documents must be supplied with the visa application;
  • what fees can be charged;
  • what role private agencies can have in the visa process:
  • what reasons can justify refusal of a visa:
  • a right of appeal against any refusal
  • criminal convictions and Schengen visas.

This training session will examine the Code and how it must be applied at Schengen Consulates with specific reference to the Consultates of Schengen states in the UK. It is designed to provide practitioners with an overview of the Code and how to use it to benefit their clients seeking Schengen visas. The session will also look at criminal convictions and Schengen visas.
