The session is aimed at legal practitioners (including particularly caseworkers) who regularly deal with EEA nationals and their family members, including not only immigration practitioners but also those primarily involved in social support.

The aim of the session is to provide an overview of the rights of the family members/relatives of EEA nationals, to improve participants’ understanding of those rights and improve their ability to make those arguments in a variety of contexts (immigration foremost, but also access to benefits, housing and NHS care).

| Tutor biographies: | Saadiya Chaudary is the Legal Project Manager at the AIRE Centre and coordinates the Centre’s Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence Law Project. Saadiya undertakes third-party interventions and litigation before UK courts and tribunals, the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union. She also provides advice on these issues through the Centre’s advice service on EU free movement law. Saadiya has delivered a number of training sessions on aspects of international and European law, and has authored publications on human rights and EU law. Saadiya is a qualified Solicitor in the UK and holds an LLM in International Law. Adam Weiss is the Assistant Director of The AIRE Centre and is involved in all of the Centre's work on migration issues, including numerous cases before the European Court of Human Rights as well as the vast majority of the AIRE Centre's advice work. He conducts training on human trafficking, domestic violence, asylum and immigration and EU free movement law in the UK and widely throughout Europe. Adam studied law in the USA and the UK and is a Member of the New York State bar. He is a part-time lecturer at Webster Graduate School, Regent’s College and the University of East London. Adam has published various articles on the free movement of persons as well as human rights and equality law. He holds an LLM in International Law and an exemption at Level 3 from the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner for ‘EU/EEA law’. The AIRE Centre is a London-based NGO whose mission is to promote awareness of European law rights and assist marginalised individuals and those in vulnerable circumstances to assert those rights. The Centre runs an advice service providing free legal advice to individuals and representatives on European Law (particularly EU migrant law) and also takes cases to the European Court of Human Rights. The Centre also frequently intervenes as a third party before national and European courts including the Court of Justice of the European Union. The Centre is currently intervening in a case before the CJEU about the rights of other/extended family members (Case C-83/11), as well as various cases before the domestic courts about the free movement of persons under EU law. |
