To apply for a place on any of the courses available through the project, please complete an application form. Places will be allocated based on applicants’ experience, extent of their work with refugee children and suitability to the particular course. You will be informed via email if you have been successful in gaining a place on the course of your choice.  We are now taking bookings for the project's second year training programme.  View available courses.

Training courses provided through the Refugee Children's Project are provided free at point of delivery and are registered with both the Bar Council and the Law Society for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points.  Training courses include:

  • Entry-level courses for immigration practitioners beginning to work, or wishing to work, with refugee children.
  • Advanced level courses for experienced immigration practitioners
  • Courses about immigration law for practitoners working in related areas of law such as crime, family and community care.

Courses for immigration practitioners are advertised first to ILPA members and then, if places remain, more widely, including on these pages.  Courses for other practitioners are advertised through specialist networks and on these pages.  Up to five places on each course are available to those working in organisations that are members of the Refugee Children's Consortium.

Good Practice in Working with Refugee Children

Entry Level Course (3 CPD points). Delivered in Glasgow (1), Manchester (1) and London (4).  This course is designed to create in a practitioner an attitude toward children's cases and a way of approaching them that allows them to develop their skills within a secure framework and give them a firm foundation on which to build their practice.  The course provides an insight into the legal and policy framework relating to the rights and entitlements of refugee children and those involved in status determination and care proceedings. Informration is provided about guidelines, standards and good practice for working with children; how to identify child specific persecution and protection needs; and means of collecting and evaluating their evidence. 

Tactics and Strategies for Age Disputes

Advanced level course (3 CPD points).  Delivered in Birmingham (1), London (2) and Manchester (1). Strategies and tactics to employ when running cases involving age disputes. It is aimed at immigration practitioners with some prior experience working with refugee children and with age disputes.  In-depth presentation and analysis of age disputes with a focus on tactics and strategies for dealing with these cases.

Working with Refugee Children: immigration law for community care lawyers

Aimed at community care lawyers who may encounter cases involving refugee children (3 CPD points). The objectives of the course are to give lawyers an understanding of the basic framework of immigration law, the interplay between immigration law and community care law and the procedures and main documents involved in asylum case so that participants can identify the relevant immigration points and protection issues. 

Working with Refugee Children: immigration law for criminal law practitioners

Aimed at criminal lawyers who may encounter cases involving refugee children (3 CPD points). The objectives of the course are to give lawyers an understanding of the basic framework of immigration law and the interplay between immigration law and criminal law; of the procedures and main documents involved in asylum case, of the impact of offences on immigration status and defences to employ so that participants can identify the relevant immigration points and protection issues.

Working with Refugee Children: immigration law for family lawyers

Aimed at family lawyers who may encounter cases involving refugee children(3 CPD points). The objectives of the course are to give lawyers an understanding of the basic framework of immigration law and the interplay between immigration law and family law; of the procedures and the main documents involved in asylum case so that participants can identify the relevant immigration points and protection issues.
