The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive review of the means available to challenging all immigration decisions, of whatever type and wherever made. Those means now include in-country appeal, out of country appeal, judicial review and statutory review; and the course will provide an overview of the technical and practical scope and limitations of each with particular emphasis on the statutory appeals regime, exceptions and limitations.

When 'non-doms' hit the headlines business immigration lawyers and others were reminded of the importance of understanding how immigration status has implications for the tax regime to which clients are subject. Julia Onslow-Cole, a member of ILPA's Executive Committee is joined by tax specialist Lee Hamilton. Together they will explain what immigration lawyers need to know about tax law and how to spot complexities and possible pitfalls for clients. A chance to ensure that you understand the implications of this complex area for advising your clients with confidence and knowing when to make referrals for tax advice.

This course will be of general benefit to wishing to build on and improve their understanding of immigration law, including practitioners with a predominantly asylum caseload who wish to place their work in a broader context. It is primarily geared towards practitioners and advisers who are seeking to be accredited in immigration law and practice, specifically at Level 2 (Senior caseworker) under the Accreditation Scheme established by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Automatic deportation - or is it? With a range of exceptions, as well as rights of appeal on human rights and European law grounds, the new deportation regime will present complex challenges to legal representatives. This course will enable you to understand how to fit existing knowledge into the new framework and be at the forefront of new developments. Steve Symonds, ILPA's legal officer, worked closely on the UK Borders Bill automatic deportation provisions as they were going through parliament and has a significant head start on understanding their implications. David Chirico's practice as a barrister specialising in immigration and criminal law receives special mention in Chambers UK Guide to the Legal Profession and he is experienced in representing in deportation cases in the courts.

One of ILPA's flagship courses, back by popular demand. Adoption law may not have changed as much as immigration law over the past few years, but has been subject to more than its fair share of change and remains a very complex field. Naomi Angell, a leading expert on international adoption law, has been involved in work on all the new legislation; she also sat on the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Board on Family Law and is a member of the Law Society children panel. She practices in international adoption law and writes and lectures widely on this area. Nadine Finch's practice as a barrister spans immigration and family law and she too has written, researched and lectured widely on these topics. A seminar by experts, to ensure that whether you are advising those adopting from abroad or simply working with families where one of the dependants is adopted, you are able to feel confident in this area of the law. The decision of the European Court of Justice in Metock v Ireland confirms ILPA's view that the UK's implementation of the Citizen's Directive is unlawful insofar as it forces third country family members of EEA nationals to meet the requirements of the UK immigration laws. This course will look at representing EEA family members, at how to use Metock and how to run these cases. Alison Hunter is co-convenor of ILPA's European Subcommittee and receives special mention in Chambers UK for her work that 'addresses the interplay of European with UK immigration law' and her work on 'durable relationships' . Nicolas Rollason is particularly recommended in the UK for free movement law and for complex matters. Both tutors have published and lectured widely on European immigration law. Nicolas' most recent seminar for ILPA was described as 'outstanding'.

Following intensive campaigning, including by ILPA, the government has announced that the existing domestic workers category will be retained for two years and then reviewed. Meanwhile awareness increases of domestic servitude as a significant element of human trafficking in the UK. How can lawyers be part of the solution, not part of the problem? Chris Randall, former Chair of ILPA and an expert in applications of this type, singled out in Chambers UK for his 'depth of knowledge', is joined by Kate Roberts of Kalayaan, which works with migrant domestic workers in the UK and is part of the Home Office's pilot on labour trafficking cases, to guide through the rules and ethical questions arising.
